great that this landed in trunk! I just submitted minor corrections to
the ticket 2689: The example was referencing the
OpenLayers.Util.simplifyLineString instead of
OpenLayers.Layer.Vector::simplify.

I faintly remember that there were ideas of having/developing a
seperate geometry-library that would handle these sorts of
functionality -- is there any progress on that library/effort?
