Thanks for all your helpful answers.
Actually the work around was simple: in a mate-terminal window, in the
menu line select "edition", then "profile" then edit default. There,
disable colours of system theme and choose black as text colour.
Background color may remain ivory.
And the mate-terminal is again usable. It is really more comfortable
than good old xterm...
