To follow up. This turns out to be a weird tolerance mismatch or worn sockets
on the Z840. The cables for the WD drives just don't fit the Z840 well. They
are fine on the Z400s and other connectors are fine with the Z840, but not
these cables and these sockets. Truly weird. I'll pull some sockets from
something I've got lying around and replace the Z840 sockets. I was able to
import the drive on the Z840 using the cable after fiddling, but put it in
using the power monitor as it fits better at both ends for reading the u8 ZFS
pool I'm moving. One more transfer and I should be able to power down the
physical s10_u8 instance permanently. Subject to the joys of VMs.
Many thanks for the help.
Have Fun!

I bought a USB power monitor dongle and plugged it in. The drives decided they
would work on the Z840. zpool import reported the drive correctly. Draws the
same current as when plugged in the Z400s.
I'm running a scrub, but when that finishes I'll test it without the power
monitor dongle.
Very perplexed as that was hours of different tests.

Thanks, that's helpful. What form factor is the 4TB drive? Is it
powered by the USB port, or does it also have an external power pack?
If there aren't any log messages showing up at all when you plug Y
into C, it could potentially be a port power supply issue.
Cheers.
