Sigh, I finally figured out what was wrong.

It's a dual monitor system, but because I have it on my test bench I only had
one monitor connected.

Having read all the SMF documentation and wandered around /var looking at logs
and discovering just how many places system logs are stored I'm rather
appalled. It's using BSD, Sys V and SMF to perform the boot process. Having
dealt with $100k/seat ISV packages, I understand why this is the case, but that
doesn't make it any less ugly.

Many thanks to all, especially Alan and Rolf. It's time for me to rethink my
systems configuration and retire u8. Performing admin work on 3 different
systems is bad enough. Four different operating systems is one too many.

Have Fun!
