Using the same OS for the login node and the compute node is better.

I am not sure whether OmniOS packages MPI though...
MPICH works OK by default while you may have issues with recent OpenMPI
using PMIx so you should export OMPI_MCA_btl=self,tcp to stick to tcp.

For job scheduling I have not updated SLURM on OI since 16.x... I can help
if needed.
