From my original post, omniosce-r151030h.iso works fine. I also tried the unofficial image built Oct 15 pointed to by Michal (ftp://openqa.oi.mnowak.cz/ <ftp://openqa.oi.mnowak.cz/>). OpenIndiana_Live_X86.iso fails in the same way.
My FreeBSD-12.1-RELEASE-amd64-dvd1.iso finally finished downloading.
