On pulseaudio update we've lost patch to use oss, which was earlier

Does mate-volume-control allow you to switch audio device (output tab)?

With AUDIODEV=/dev/sound/1 in the environment, here's what I see in
the Sound Preferences application GUI. The Hardware tab is blank.
The Output tab shows two devices:

   o audiohd#1 onboard1, a
   o Solaris PCM sink

The first is the correct one. I don't know what the second one is.

I'll check later on another similar system that does not have AUDIODEV
set in the environment.

I do not have AUDIODEV set and see exactly same list (with audiohd#1, a selected)

Switching between two is possible, but then pulseaudio dies:

[2019-04-02 12:45:59] xxx pulseaudio[5184]: [ID 295310 user.error] [oss] module-oss.c: pa_read() failed: Resource temporarily unavailable [2019-04-02 15:56:38] xxx pulseaudio[5184]: [ID 295310 user.error] [solaris] sink.c: Assertion '!pa_thread_mq_get()' failed at pulsecore/sink.c:2288, function pa_sink_set_mute(). And no more sounds to hear... unless I start pulseaudio manually

Regards.
