pkg update killed my older desktop today. I was able to download text installer and go through irc on a latop with no hard drive and a bootable flash drive and learn how to access to rpool data.
I then tried to update older laptop and same thing happened Both machines amd64 around 2009. Make cp of /boot into /root before laptop reboot.
