We had a stream of discussion about Solaris on this mailing-list and other long threads about bullshit nitpicking
This is the -discuss list, not the dev list, so I guess my past experience with mailing lists indicated that the topics would not always be as focused as a dev list. I'm really not certain what other long threads you have identified as bullshit nitpicking, but now I'm interested to review the list archives.
while fixing code and packaging in OI could use such energy: surely there is room for real development.
Packaging was one area where I really thought I could contribute. So far I have successfully contributed one package (a font), and the contribution process was far more difficult than I anticipated. A large part of that is because my familiarity is with older version control systems like subversion, not with the git/github workflow. I plan to to try again with other software, but for now it will have to be the simplest tasks. I looked at this last week when you first posted about it:
- Migrate libjpeg dependencies to libjpeg-turbo: https://www.illumos.org/issues/7391
With the changes you've made to shared-macros.mk, aren't many of the packages already rebuilding with libjpeg-turbo when the automated build happens? If that's true, isn't the main task to update the dependencies for each of the listed packages, so they depend on libjpeg-turbo rather than the IJG version?
