version of package is good to override the legacy bits with no conflict?

Yes. Look at the sfw-gate component, you can borrow at least SMF manifests and methods. Don't try to translate sfw-gate Makefile logic into component's Makefile logic one-to-one, this will lead to ugly Makefile :)
