Gmail deletes bounced messages without user approval, so it is not doing everything by the book.

It's also not bike sheding. It is the question of company mail privacy vs blindfolded getting cloud solutions.

PS. just as an aside, if you are using dovecot for your IMAP, a good
webmail system is roundcube, and a good IMAP proxy (from external to
internal) is "perdition"
