Have you looked at fsvs? It also tries to preserve permissions.
We have backup/fsvs in OI Hipster repository.
I haven't used it actively on Solaris/illumos systems, but it works
rather good on our Linux servers.
I haven't, no. I prefer the distributed model used by mercurial or git
to Subversion.
