I am going to try again with 128k. Should know something in a few hours.

Here are my test results:

Data set 1

    zfs settings | block size
compress recordsize | 512 4k ratio
----------------------------------------------
off 128k 304M 305M 1.00
on 128k 201 211 1.05
off 8k 302 312 1.03
on 8k 210 260 1.24

Data set 2

    zfs settings | block size
compress recordsize | 512 4k ratio
----------------------------------------------
off 128k 178 179 1.01
on 128k 75.3 82.1 1.09
off 8k 178 184 1.03
on 8k 84 134 1.60

I created the data quickly using tar from postgresql data files. I used two zpools, both use spinning discs, one has 512 and the other 4k sectors. I only have small databases, the sizes are all MB as reported by zfs list "USED" after a sync. compress=on is lzjb (it's "closed" Solaris).
