That is, of course, a fair question. If you think about the diversity of distros in the Linux world, they tend to be differentiated in two primary ways, by packaging, and by function. Where function could be desktop or server or appliance, with subcategories in each (such as the choice of desktop environment). Tribblix differs significantly from OpenIndiana in both respects - packaging is SVR4 vs IPS (and that is a deliberate choice); desktop is Xfce and Enlightenment vs JDS/Gnome.
