Thanks for the great example... I will be trying some of it out soon.

Maybe you didn't notice in my OP that mentioned the square brackets
and mentioned that I'd tried with square brackets both hostname and
host IP.  the without, the logs said the same thing in either case.

and yes I did rebuild test.mc into test.cf on each attempt, and
restart sendmail on each attempt.

So what host these logs referring to.  I mentioned I thought brackets
should prevent a lookup ... so what `host' are these logs referring
to?

Specific logs when the smart host is in brackets:
