Check out owncloud. The open source components might be useful.
I personally, and two other IT guys that I've spoken with from
different companies, have been burned by placing any trust in
owncloud. In fact, I'm still subscribed to their mailing list, and
at least once a day, new people write in, asking for help, because it
either fails to sync files it should sync, or some data seems to be
lost. My advice: Steer clear.
In Microsoft, what you're looking for is called DFS. I don't know
any good linux/unix based bidirectional tools such as requested, but
if you start searching for alternatives to DFS (or if you simply pay
MS and deploy DFS) then you have an answer, and hopefully can find
some FOSS solution out there.

Seafile seems to work reasonably well. We've actually been looking for
something with more capability though, one that can handle various
levels of permissions and multiple-projects. But, if all you want is
something to plugin to your own website with Dropbox like capabilities
and multi-device synchronization capability, Seafile seems to be ready
to fill that bit.
Thanks for feedback Edward, Doug and Gregory.
I was hoping for something really simple, but it looks like it may be a
bit more involved.
