I do have another machine that I could use for this that has 32G of RAM,
but the latest OI ISO won't properly start up - stays in text mode, I
believe it doesn't like the video card in there, and unfortunately it
gives a login prompt, and I don't know what login to use off the OI
live disk.

I'm sure it should have been on OI wiki, but can't Google
it up in a visible place ;)

The login:passwords should be:
* jack:jack for unprivileged user with RBAC Admin role
* root:openindiana for the root user; note that in normal
operations (other than single-user) "root" is a role,
which can be exploited by "jack" (or any other users
with the needed role sets) using pfexec before elevated
  privilege commands.
Possibly, on the LiveCD "root" is a normal privileged
user, I don't firmly remember now.

After installation your first user (name/pass requested
by installation wizard) has roles equivalent to "jack"'s.
