In respect of the VLC package, I logged into http://forum.videolan.org
and asked about how to troubleshoot the problem

Remi requested I run the following commands vlc -vv and xvinfo (results
can be found on the forum). It appears that VLC is unable to create the
video output from this message I captured
[868c218] main video output error: video output creation failed
