FWIW

I have a couple of older house brand machines which boot& run
everything up to S10 U7 just fine. However, neither S10 U8 nor OI
will boot. I encountered similar problems w/ recent versions of
Linux. In the Linux case, I was able to figure out boot options
(IIRC noacpi) that allowed Linux to boot. I've not pressed the issue
w/ Solaris because I really only use the older machines for testing
and I've got several newer systems.

I'd *really* like to see OI provide FreeBSD style console boot
messages so one has some clue as to what is going on when things
fail. It took a ridiculous number of attempts booting Linux before I
was able to read the message that flashed by on the console and fix
the problem.

If you'd like the details, email me and I'll look for them.

Did you remove

console=graphics

from the kernel$ line in the grub menu?

Also, you should add

-v

to that line if you want to see the boot time messaging.
