What tree are you using? I am using the org.openembedded.stable tree, and "generic.conf" exists under org.openembedded.stable/conf/distro/generic.conf.
I checked the git repos online (http://git.openembedded.net/?p=org.openembedded.dev.git;a=summary), and it appears the generic.conf file has been removed from the ord.openembedded.dev tree. If you need to use the dev tree, it looks like you might need to use a DISTRO other than generic. Otherwise, maybe you can move to the stable tree. Good luck!
