Now we are getting somewhere. Something is wrong with the OS upgrade. All that's left is to figure out what is missing or what is ignoring USB events.
I don't use USB sticks with OI but I noticed something probably related on my desktop: For some time now newly plugged mice or keyboards cannot be used in X11. Even logout and re-login doesn't help.
