You may find that you haven't been using the i915 driver. If you have
the Xorg.0.log for which the Illumos driver was used, look to see if if
there are lots of 'intel(0)', or if there are lots of VESA lines. If the
latter, you have been using the VESA driver, and *not* i915 (diff'ing
Xorg.0.log between the updated driver and the previous driver might be
illuminating).
