I do think one of the main arguments for returning float remains the analogy with division. I don't know about the rest of you, but it has been such a relief not to have to tell students any more "you should add a ".", otherwise it does integer division". For most purposes, it simply shouldn't matter whether one types an integer or a float; if it does, then one has to think about it, and it seems fine for that relatively specialized case to have to use a specialized function. -- Marten
