Seems to be related to the masked values:

print r2010[:3,:3]
[[-- -- --]
 [-- -- --]
 [-- -- --]]

print abs(r2010)[:3,:3]
[[-- -- --]
 [-- -- --]
 [-- -- --]]


print r2010[ r2010[:3,:3] <0 ]
[-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --]

print r2010[ abs(r2010)[:3,:3] < 0]
[]
