Creating a custom maven-compile-plugin profile

The documentation for maven-compile-plugin:compile states that the profile
configuration parameter can be "FULL, COMPACT, (or a custom one specified in
a compiler-plugins.xml)." I can't seem to find any documentation on how I
would go about creating a custom profile or where I would put it. Is it
possible? Thanks.
