I have 1.4.0 installed in VS 2010, but I am still unable to do a mvn
compile. Should we try to sort out the problems now, or should I just
wait until the final 1.4.0 release?

It hasn't been released yet, the vote is still under way on the dev
list. The site probably got published too soon.
If you'd like to help test it, check the dev list for the vote thread
which will have a url [1] and then post your feedback there.
