   @kezhuw Perhaps we can directly align the proposed `checkAndIncVersion`?
   
   I'd suggest:
   
   ```java

           if (expectedVersion != -1 && expectedVersion != currentVersion) {
               throw new KeeperException.BadVersionException(path);
           }
