The issue here is that the main maintainers haven't aligned on how exactly to do this, so it hasn't become a priority yet to come up with the perfect design here. I'm guessing you don't want to wait an extended time for resolution here, so another approach might be to open a (Draft) PR addressing this however works for your org, and then you can use that on your fork for the moment, and we can decide if we want to merge/maintain it as is... there's just a risk of it becoming something we want to redesign later, which creates some technical debt risk.
