You're right. I've thought of all kinds of other options since I sent my initial message and I also realize that my message was incomplete. The device actually is using wireless so I could also have used a router with dd wrt or maybe set up a linux machine with wireless as an access point (as implied by your link). For other reasons, I already have the device double NATed on a separate wireless router behind my actual internet-connected router so the connection between the two seemed like a good place to "sniff."
