Hi Art, I'd recommend Ubuntu for a desktop distro. Not just for new users but for most users. It also has the best support from a lot of 3rd party software developers which leads into your second question. You can look into Wine and its variants like PlayOnLinux. Those can run some (but not all Windows programs) Additionally, some programs run buggy. Office and Photoshop are a couple I haven't tried in a while but would be interested in how well they do these days. I got into virtualization a few years ago and haven't done much with Wine since. I just run a Windows virtual machine for some programs. Virtual machines are a great way to try new Linux distros too. Since virtualization means your hardware is running 2 or more operating systems simultaneously your system resources aren't fully available for 1 OS. That may be an issue at times when working with something like Photoshop or a graphics intensive game. In that situation you can look at dual booting your computer and having your choice of Linux or Windows every time you power up.
