Although my primary OS is Linux, I use Windows also. I'm very skeptic that presence of IE would slow down your machine. If it's not started it won't run. You probably started to run out of space. 2GB is slim so you have a page file (swap) and if you are close to fill your hard drive it can slow things down. Also if you swap.
My advices: For Firefox - uBlock Origin + Ghostery: speed up browsing a lot by filtering out crap. Don't use ABP For malware scare away: Process Explorer running and EMET 5.1 For lack of space: request a disc cleanup, but when the analysis pops up, press the cleanup system files. That can get rid of gigabytes of update logs and crap. You might not be able to roll back some updates after that though. Why don't you use Linux on it?
