Can anyone recommend a good turn-by-turn navigation app for Android phones?
Starting a few months ago, Google Maps has become almost useless for
real-time turn-by-turn navigation. After a few minutes use, it becomes
time-lagged, with all apps on the phone running slower and slower. I have
had it give me turn instructions for intersections I had passed several
minutes earlier. At the same time, the phone gets hotter and hotter,
suggesting that the navigation engine is using an ever-increasing share of
CPU time.
Eventually the phone locks up, requiring a battery pull.
This same behaviour shows up in both Google Maps and Maps.ME. Maps.ME uses
data from OpenStreetMap, but may be using the same navigation engine as
Google Maps. In both cases, the slowdown only occurs if I try to use
turn-by-turn guidance, suggesting that the navigation engine is buggy.
