Howard: inodes? inodes are atomic part of the ext type file systems (and
some other UNIX file systems too). I haven't ever heard of trouble
because of running out of inodes. How big is the partition? Is it ext3?
First time I have had such an issue myself, Csaba. Twas a bit of a head
scratcher as well, hence my reporting about df -hi. I forget what
Google link lead me to /usr/src. That / partition is ext4.
My / partitions are usually 11 to 15GB depending on the overall size of
the drive(s). Some of my habits (to which Jack alludes) come from the
days of installing linux on three or four < 1GB drives, without LVM.
It is my practice to have a 300MB /boot at the front of the drive in
line with Tilghman's comments. Second partition is /, third is swap and
then an extended partition with /var and /home (sometimes /usr).
