However, if we ever develop software that can further refine its own programming, and particularly if there is an environment where numerous such programs compete against each other (so that survival of the fittest comes into play), we could potentially end up with hyperintelligent programs, if that gave a survival advantage. In any case, we might end up with software whose mode of success was counter to our own interests. We are more intelligent than disease microbes, but that doesn't keep them from being a threat.
