AFAIK the answer is unfortunately no. I think the driver may need a
shutdown handler similar to what is in e100.
whoever removed it from the kernel source when they were cleaning out
reboot notifiers maybe should have set up the shutdown handler instead but
did not.

according to the comment in that commit, e1000 suspend should be getting
called by sys_reboot->device_suspend->e1000_suspend
so WoL should still work, eh?
I'll have a go at reproducing the WoL failures next week.
