Yet there needs to be some cross-platform commonality for the API yes? That was the main thrust behind my simplistic asking about posix aio being sufficient (which of course could be more than necessary :) to the task - at least as an API, not specifically about any given implementation of it - I agree that doing aio by launching another thread is rather silly...
