I expect the worst behavior to simply translate into a mute interface
with or without VLAN but...

Murphy always hits in your back. I'd rather avoid the screwdriver option
especially as I do not know how much time it will take to get things right
(if ever). 

Btw if there is an unused el-cheapo 8169 somewhere, it could do a good
job with VLAN until the via-velocity driver is fine. The 8169 is buggy
wrt unusual MTU but it is _cheap_.

Not beyond fsck due to an usual system crash.
