The e1000 does have hardware bugs with TSO and SG, which the
e1000 driver should have the necessary workarounds for.

I am confident that it's not the change being discussed, but rather an
existing problem with the e1000 hardware and/or driver.  The chip
simply wedges and stops sending any packets at all, not even pings,
you can't blame the Linux stack on that :-)
