I dont think this is a matter of fixing in Java. Problem is, Gnome 3 went towards touch UI, flat style, etc. You can see that in large dropdown buttons and flat tabs. To see that better can login to or find gnome 3 screenshots. Of course, that style does not fit well with Swing. I am not sure what is guarantee of GTK2 being shipped in distance future, so this could be a problem eventually. I am also curious, if it looks better if finding alternative GTK3 themes.
