It is precisely a euphemism. The Operating System is only "smart", because it gives the impression that it is taking care of the labour of computer use on your behalf, so you can focus on simply enjoying the "content".
Hah! I suppose we can begin to reverse this trend by referring to such devices as "stupid f**king phones" or "goddam idiotic computer" perhaps? It's all in the naming, anyway ;-)
