The shuriken here shown was made by me in 1995, along with three others.
They represented a cockerel and a beetle. They were made from mild steel
and cut using jewellers tools, and finally polished. Originally the
culmination of a drawing project enacted on the streets of Bristol from
1990 to 1992, where ephemeral chalk drawings were performed as an act of
transgression, challenging hierarchies within art establishment and museum,
and providing fun for the artist. The stars were seen as an embodiment of
the idea that after all negotiation has broken down then physical violence
is often enacted. The original four stars will be on show from this
Saturday at Boudica, Brighton. All are welcome to the opening event, 7pm
till 10pm. Drinks and a bar, live music from Solid Birds Flying along with
a retrospective of the art of Simon Mclennan, including drawings covering
the last ten years, an installation utilising original abstract drawings
for a super 8 animation from 1996 and much else.
Come down and let's chin wag and imagine!!
Simon
