I'm not sure what I did to fix the problem. After fiddling with the code on 
several places(many which was non-SNMP specific) the problem got solved. 
Running snmpwalk now stops at the last OID in that subtree.

No. At least not from the perspective of the individual MIB handlers. 

Each MIB handler should simply return without setting a value. 
The agent driving code detects this, and will automatically move 
on to the next registered handler (if any). 
The individual handlers don't know what other MIBs are registered 
with the agent, so couldn't tell whether to return endOfMibView or not. 

It's only the main agent code that recognises when it's run out of 
handlers to try, and hence report back endOfMibView
