INTER-COLLEGIATE SAILING ASSOCIATION 2013 ALL-AMERICA TEAM, COLLEGE SAILOR OF THE YEAR AND OTHER HONORS AWARDED St. Petersburg, Fla. (May 30, 2013) – Thursday night was the final ICSA awards banquet at St. Petersburg Yacht Club in St. Petersburg, Fla. after the last day of racing for the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship. The Coed and Crew ICSA All-Americans, Everett B. Morris Trophy for the College Sailor of the Year, Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Award and the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy for the Best Overall Team were presented. The names of the winners will be added to the ICSA Hall of Fame display located in the Robert Crown Center at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. During the banquet, Josh Adams, Managing Director of U.S. Olympic Sailing, spoke to the 200-plus crowd about the various pathways to the Olympic podium and encouraged them to sail high performance boats. “College sailors, you are on the Olympic Pathway,” he said. “You are one small but important step away from moving your Olympic effort forward. Get in the game. Come sailing. The U.S Olympic Sailing Program wants to help you do this.” The next highlight of the banquet was the presentation of the awards. A committee of coaches who represent the seven conferences in the ICSA selects the ICSA All-America Team. For selecting the All-Americans the committee evaluates a competitor based on their competitive record in inter-conference competition as well as conference and national championships. The committee analyzes how this record compares to fellow competitors, the quality of the competition the record was achieved in, the span of the record over the fall and spring seasons, results achieved with different crews, and how the record compares to previous All-American winners in past years. Tonight the 2,000th All-American was named. For All-American crew selections, the committee uses criteria similar to skipper selection, but also considers: demonstrated leadership (may consider seniority), outstanding body mechanics and boat handling skills as well as proven ability to improve the results of the skipper(s) with whom he or she sails. The Everett B. Morris Trophy is awarded annually to the College Sailor of the Year for outstanding performance at the highest level of sailing in the collegiate year. The trophy is named in memory of a distinguished journalist who spent more than 30 years, as a yachting writer and editor. This year there were three finalists for the prestigious award: Alec Anderson, a senior at Roger Williams University, Chris Barnard, a senior at Georgetown University and Juan Maegli a senior at College of Charleston. The winner, calculated by the numbers, who is also the A-division and overall winner of the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship is Juan Maegli. Previous winners of this award include Charlie Buckingham (Georgetown University), who achieved the honor twice (2009, 2011) and is a member of the 2013 U.S. Sailing Team Sperry-Topsider and Chris Barnard (a finalist tonight), who won the award in 2012. This is the second time (2010) that Maegli has been named an ICSA All-American. He won the 2012 LaserPerformance/ICSA Singlehanded National Championship in November and placed in the top three at most of the regattas he sailed over the 2012-2013 season for Charleston. “This is something I did not expect,” Maegli says. After competing in the London 2012 Olympics representing his home country, Guatemala, Maegli was not sure he would return to college sailing. “I decided to come back and then I get this great honor,” he says. Maegli and his teammates were hoping to sail better in the Team Race National Championship, but he says they all rallied and came together to sail well at the Coed Championship, “It is a really good feeling,” he says of winning Coeds with his team. Although sailing is not popular where Maegli grew up in Guatemala, his father has always been a sailor and at the age of five Maegli started crewing for him in catamarans. Maegli studied Business Administration at Charleston and now that he has graduated he is looking forward to getting back to his Olympic campaign. This will be his third Olympic campaign and he says he will push hard for the Games in Rio. “I hope to win the first gold medal for my country [in the Laser], it has always been my lifelong dream.” The winner of the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy for best overall collegiate team is Yale University. The team with the most Fowle points, which are compiled results of the ICSA Women’s Singlehanded, Men’s Singlehanded, Match Racing, Coed Semi-Finals, Women’s, Team Racing, and Coed National Championships, determines the Fowle trophy. Yale had a successful competitive year including placing second at the 2012 ICSA Match Race National Championship, winning the Western Coed Semi-Finals and winning the 2013 ICSA/APS Team Race National Championship. The Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Award is awarded annually to the Sportsman of the Year. The trophy honors Robert Hobbs (MIT '64), past Executive Vice President of ICSA, past President of U.S. Sailing (1992-1994), and former chair of the U.S. Sailing Olympic Committee. This year’s winner is Dillon Paiva, a senior from Old Dominion University, who has shown outstanding sportsmanship during his collegiate sailing career. Andrew Sommer, a senior from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was also a finalist for sportsmanship honor. The Women’s All-Americans were announced earlier at the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women’s National Championship banquet as well as the Quantum Female Sailor of the Year. The finalists for this award were Mary Hall, a sophomore from the U.S. Naval Academy, Deirdre Lambert a sophomore from Dartmouth College and Erika Reineke a freshman from Boston College.
