Dave,
Did you specify the property on the command line ? If so, then it by design : properties specified on the command line are always marked read-only.
See http://nant.sourceforge.net/nightly/help/tasks/property.html for an example on how to provide a default value for a property and still allow it to be overridden on the command line.
