You don't need to surround property names with braces in expressions :

      <if test="${directory::exists(build.dir)}" >
           <echo message="${build.dir} already exists..."/>
       </if>

What is the correct syntax for testing if a directory exists? I have tried:

      <if test="${directory::exists('${build.dir}') = false}" >
   <echo message="Making ${build.dir}..."/>
       </if>
       <if test="directory::exists('${build.dir}') = true" >
   <echo message="${build.dir} already exists..."/>
       </if>

Both seem to be incorrect.
