I think MONO_PATH is a stopgap solution for not having a gac. Assemblies will either be located in or below the current directory of the main .exe or on the MONO_PATH - or at least thats my understanding.

What error are you getting ? Have you tried adding ~/dev/nant/bin/ to the PATH export ? Never exactly understood what the MONO_PATH export was for, is it really a search path in which mono searches assemblies ?
