imap and maildir ...

Greetings.  Is there any special that needs to be
done to be able to read a remote maildir folder
using imap?   If I choose {host}maildir or
{host}maildir/cur I get the message:
        {host}<choice> is not a selectable mailbox.

Any help would be appreciated.
