Both have been there since at least FreeBSD 4.x, and at minimum 2
years before that useless ticket. Same with mk*temp*() there as well.
Note 4.x has long since been officially killed along with everything
up through 8.2.

I usually suggest time be spent with current OS releases, lest one
become trapped in the past. Users will upgrade eventually, nothing
wrong with holding out a carrot for them, which also carries the rest
of the world forward when they move. Make a support plan and publish
it... seems all the rage these days. Problem solved.
