As a hobby user I would add:

MSP430 ISD is/can be cheaper. make your own or $49 US v's $299 for the
JTAG-ICE. Yes I know the ice200 is now $99 but that doesn't do mega parts

MSP430 currently has better/more options for low power design. Correct me if
I'm wrong but you can't wake a megaAVR from the lowest power mode on a UART
interrupt.

I'm finding MSP's easier and cheaper in small volumes.

Against that you need to work in smd and 3V, but that seems to be the way
things are going anyway. The new application note on 3V/5V interfacing on
the TI site is the best I've seen on the subject.

Lastly MSP-GCC is fantastic and being actively developed by Dmitry/Chris e/
and others. IMO a more stable GCC port than AVR-GCC and ISD on the way:-)
