Since our friend JTK obliges us to answer, here's my opinion on the subject:
Question: Is there a reason to hope?
Answer: Yes there is reason to hope, the reason is that Mozilla should
be the best browser in the world.
Question: Is there hope?
Answer: Yes there is hope, everyday the developers are working very hard
optimizing the code in any way possible. Until 0.8.1 there had not been
much performance work, but now the developers are really working on
that. The footprint will probably not be reduced *much* lower, although
it does get better with every release.
I hope this answers your question, if you have a more precise question
on the matter feel free to ask.
Fabian.
P.S: JTK talks about a "complete lack of responses" to your post. I
would object that, this question was posted less than 24 hours ago :P
